The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Cincinnati Reds 7-2 Thursday afternoon. Josh Bell and Colin Moran each hit a three-run home run. For Bell, it was his 18th home run of the season. He has now tied Jason Bay’s Pirate mark with 12 home runs in the month of May. He also has 23 extra-base hits, which is one short of Paul Waner’s all-time Pirate record in any month.
Bell had three hits in the game, raising his average to .345 which is second-best in the National League. He has now hit safely in 28 of his last 29 games.
Pirates starting pitcher Steven Brault allowed just three hits in 5-1/3rd innings. He is now 4-0 in his career against Cincinnati, and currently has a 19-inning scoreless streak against the Reds.
The Bucs host the Milwaukee Brewers tonight at PNC Park in the first game of a four-game series. The Pirates are 27-27 and four behind Chicago. The Brewers are 31-25 and one game back. Joe Musgrove is the Pirates starting pitcher tonight.
