FRENCH OPEN:
Rafael Nadal won his 12th French Open title yesterday in a dazzling final against Dominic Thiem. Nadal is the only player to win the same major tournament 12 times.
Australia’s Ashleigh Barty took just 70 minutes to beat Czech player Marketa Vondrousova, 6-1, 6-3, in the women’s final at the French Open.
Belmont Stakes:
Sir Winston, ridden by Joel Rosario, won the Belmont Stakes over the weekend in the third and final contest in American horse racing’s Triple Crown. The win is the second this season for trainer Mark Casse. He also trained War of Will, winner of the Preakness but only ninth at Belmont.
STANLEY CUP:
The Boston Bruins beat the St. Louis Blues 5-1 yesterday and are tied 3-3 after last night’s Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Boston heads home for Game 7 on Wednesday night.
DAVID ORTIZ SHOT:
David Ortiz was reported to be out of surgery and “doing fine” last night after treatment for a gunshot wound. He was shot in the back at a bar in Santo Domingo, his hometown in the Dominican Republic. It was unclear whether Ortiz was the gunman’s target. Now retired, Ortiz was a 10-time All-Star who led Boston to three World Series titles before retiring after the 2016 season.
