Drivers across the state should be aware of a program about to go into effect that could issue automated fines for speeding in work zones.
PennDOT and the Turnpike Commission have announced that the required 60-day pre-enforcement period has started for the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement program.
This program uses vehicle mounted systems to detect and record motorists exceeding posted work zone speed limits using electronic speed timing devices. The goal of this program is to protect workers and all zones chosen for the program will be clearly marked with signs.
The pre-enforcement period of device deployment will end March 4th at which time violations will begin to be issued in active work zones. The first offense will include a warning letter followed by fines of $75 and $150 for second and third offenses.
