A new law is now giving property owners a different way to designate land as private with no trespassing allowed.
House Bill 1772 adds language to the section of state law dealing with criminal trespass allowing for the use of purple paint on trees or posts.
According to the State Game Commission, vertical purple lines at least 8 inches long and 1 inch wide are now lawful to designate private property everywhere except for Allegheny and Philadelphia counties. All painted marks must be between 3 and 5 feet off the ground and must be no more than 100 feet apart.
This bill was signed into law by Governor Wolf in November and officially took effect earlier this week.
If hunters or others disregard this marking and trespass on private property, they could face up to a year in jail or $2,500 in fines.
