In hockey, the Pittsburgh Penguins lost their fifth game in a row last night as they lost to the Anaheim Ducks 3-2. Jason Zucker scored both goals for the Penguins and while taking the loss goaltender Matt Murray stopped 21 of 24 shots against him. The Pens are back in action tonight in San Jose as they face the sharks. Face-off is set for around 10:30 PM.
Baseball news, the Pittsburgh Pirates are now 0-7 to start spring training as they lost to the Baltimore Orioles 11-4 at LEECOM Park yesterday. The Pirates will be on the road in Florida to play the Minnesota Twins this evening at 6:05 PM. The Twins are 4-1 so far in spring training.
High School WPIAL Championships from last night at the Peterson Event Center, in 5A boys basketball, the Mars Planets lost in a heartbreaker 52-51 against Laurel Highlands. With less than 5 seconds left in the game, Laurel Highlands made two free-throws to take the lead and win the game. In 4A girls basketball, North Catholic beat previously unbeaten Southmoreland 61-44. Both Mars and North Catholic now move on to the PIAA state playoffs. Both teams await site, time and opponent for their respective first round game.
In District 9 Girls basketball from last night, the Moniteau girls lost their 3A title game against Brookville 64-58 in overtime.
Today in District 10, the Slippery Rock girls basketball team will play Grove City for the Championship at Farrell High School, tip-off is set for 2:30 PM.
The Butler Golden Tornado boys basketball will play in district 7 6A WPIAL title game tonight at the Peterson Event Center. Butler will play the Mount Lebanon Blue Devils for the second straight year in the championship and hope to reverse their fortunes from last season. Tip-off is set for 9 PM. Pregame coverage begins at 8:40 PM with the coach’s show featuring Matt Clement. Tyler Friel and Father Kevin Fazio will have the call of the championship game on WBUT 1050 AM and the Rock Station 97.7 FM.
