Motorists parking in downtown Butler might notice a new payment option in one of the city’s busiest lots.
Parking Manager for the City of Butler, Jim Chiprean, told our newsroom, “A lot of people don’t have coins so now if you have dollar bills or credit cards, you can now use the new kiosk in the Diamond Lot.”
This unit is identical to the one in the new parking garage, is solar-powered, and does not require any maintenance as all information is relayed by internet connection.
Although the old coin operated meters will remain operational in the lot at the old rates, those wishing to take advantage of the convenience of the new kiosk will pay double the cost to park.
“The current pricing in the lot is still $.25/half hour and $.50/hour but with the new kiosk pay station, it’s $.50/half hour and $1/hour. That includes all the fees for credit cards and everything,” Chiprean explained.
According to Chiprean, now that the infrastructure is set up to handle the kiosks, if this trial run goes smoothly, the city could choose to invest in additional kiosk payment stations for other city parking lots and spaces.
