A generous donation will go a long way in helping the community dinner program in Butler.
Walmart announced earlier today they are donating $20,000 to First English Lutheran Church—which community dinner coordinator Mary Jo Swanson says will help out the various participating churches.
“The money will be shared with the other community dinners,” Swanson said. “We’ve shared so much food that Walmart has provided. They’ve donated thousands of dollars worth of food that we’ve shared with the other churches in the community as well. That’s been an amazing help, especially during this time.”
Butler Township Commissioner Sam Zurzolo help coordinate the effort between Walmart and the community dinner program.
“We were looking for a way to help out people in the community, and I know this is a great program that helps a lot of people,” Zurzolo said.
The community dinners are typically sit down meals, but are now served to-go for health safety reasons.
“The social time is missing, but people have been very aware and very responsible as to picking up a bag and leaving,” Swanson said.
The community dinners are each weekday evening from 5-6 p.m. and serve anywhere from 100 to 200 people.
