Butler Area School District administrators are continuing with the process to assemble a budget for the 2020-2021 school year even with a wide variety of unknown variables.
According to Butler Area Superintendent Dr. Brian White, one of the main ideas at the center of their plans is no new tax increases.
“We know this is going to be a very challenging budget year, and we don’t know all the pieces yet,” White said. “We know residents and businesses are going to struggle to pay taxes in a timely manner. With all that said, we really feel that we’re going to make a commitment not to raise taxes this year.”
“We’ll engage in strategies to maintain our current budget levels and reduce expenditures where we can,” White said. “We’ll really try to monitor opportunities that come from the state and federal governments as well.”
White also said that he believes that the full impact of the pandemic could not totally be realized by school districts for several years.
An anticipated shortfall at the state level is very likely to impact educational funding but it is much too early to determine by how much but Butler administrators will continue to stick to the budget timeline that is in place. This calls for a preliminary budget to be presented for vote by the board on May 11th with a final vote for approval in June.
