With the COVID-19 pandemic and stay-at-home orders putting a strain on some relationships, Butler County is making a procedural change to allow other couples to finalize theirs in a timelier manner.
The Marriage License Bureau of the Butler County Orphans Court is now allowing couples to complete marriage licenses virtually.
Butler County Register of Wills Sarah Edwards decided to offer this service for local residents due to a large number of requests for marriage licenses that her office has received over the past few weeks.
There are a few guidelines.
- At least one marriage applicant must be a Butler County resident.
- Only couples with a scheduled wedding date and officiant may apply.
- No issuing self-uniting marriage licenses will be issued at this time (Sarah explains this in our interview)
- The couple must complete the marriage application online by visiting the County Fusion website. Log into the website as a guest and select the option “E-file Marriage License Application.”
You also need to call the office (724-284-5354) to alert them that you have submitted an application. At this point, as Sarah explains, the current system will not notify the office automatically of an application submission.
There is a process you then will go through including a virtual interview and signing. The signed application must then be returned by mail or by being dropped off in the lobby of the Butler County Government Center. The license will be generated and either mailed to or picked up by the couple to be used within sixty (60) days.
