Many city residents may be disappointed to learn that there will not be a lot of noticeable difference in activities permitted in city parks in the reopening phase yellow beginning today.
“I can certainly understand why some people may end up being frustrated. It’s nice out, and people want to take their kids to the playground or start playing softball,” Butler City Councilman Jeff Smith said. “But these are unprecedented times and City Council is following the recommendations from the state.”
Parks will continue to be open for walking and biking while social distancing. Picnic shelters will be available for use but will have a maximum capacity of 25 people who should maintain social distancing. Although tennis courts will be opened, all playgrounds will remain closed as will all skate parks, basketball courts, baseball, softball, and football fields.
According to Smith, City Police will encourage those using the parks to follow the guidelines that are in place.
“If the police see someone engaging in an activity they shouldn’t, they’ll probably ask them to stop,” Smith said. “We’re not in the business of putting guards at the parks. We’re relying on people understanding the situation, being respectful, and doing what they need to do.”
Smith recommended that people upset with the restrictions still in place should contact the office of Governor Tom Wolf to share their opinion.
