No people were injured as a result of a house fire Tuesday morning at a home in Harrisville but a few pets were not as fortunate.
The fire broke out just after 10:15 a.m. at a home in the 400 block of East Mercer Street.
Harrisville VFC Chief Steve Bickel explains what crews found:
“When we got there, there was flames coming out the roof of the eastern-most part of the building through the roof and they said that’s where they thought the fire started was in that what they called the game room.”
Crews from 14 fire departments managed to get the fire under control in about 20 minutes but many remained at the scene until around 2 making sure hot spots did not reignite.
Three cats died as a result of this fire. Although the owners were insured, the Red Cross was called in to assist since the structure was essentially destroyed.
“It was pretty much gutted, the whole house. Some contents are salvageable like papers and books and stuff but most all the furniture and everything was damaged. It burned through the roof and the roof collapsed at the one end and then we had to cut holes in the other part of the roof and so I’d say its pretty much beyond repair.”
This fire required the shutdown of East Mercer Street at the intersection with Route 8.
