A remarkable effort from a teenage pilot-in-training has delivered thousands of personal protective equipment to hospitals in Virginia. Now the young man is scheduling a trip to Butler.
16-year-old T.J. Kim from Virginia was like millions of other high school students who had their education interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.
But, Kim took advantage of the extra time to fly, by using his training sessions to deliver PPE to rural hospitals.
“It all started when coronavirus first hit. School and my lacrosse were canceled, so all I really had to do was my flight training,” Kim told Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association’s podcast.
“I talked with my dad about ways to use my flight training for community service, and we combined that idea to come up with Operation S.O.S.”
Operation S.O.S. stand for Supplies Over Skies—and Kim’s mission is now expanding out of Virginia.
The teen will be making a stop at the Butler Regional Airport Saturday at 11:45 a.m.
Officials from Butler Health System, including Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Rottinghaus, will be on hand to receive the gloves, masks, and other PPE.
BHS said Congressman Mike Kelly (R-Butler) played a role in bringing Kim to Butler.
