We wanted to share more information about the story we reported to you this week about a man with what looked like a sword at the Dollar General in Saxonburg.
Here is a portion of our interview with Kendee Conner here:
We spoke with the mother of the individual about her son’s situation. Kendee Conner told our newsroom that her son, Kenneth Conner, 34, is on the autism spectrum and was having some recent struggles. Conner says her son has been emotionally affected over the stress of the pandemic over the past many months. She says the family does not understand why, in an unusual move, he dressed up in a Halloween costume with a plastic sword and walk to the store. Kendee says her son never leaves the property without someone with him.
According to his mom, Kenneth is currently in the hospital being treated. Kendee Conner says she and her family live in the Saxonburg area and wanted to shed light on her son’s situation and asked for prayers. She shared with us the difficulties in battling stigma, helping a loved one with such challenges, and society’s misconceptions. She also asked for compassion for those who are in the same shoes.
We confirmed with State Police that the individual was in front of the store, not inside, and he was wearing a black and gold costume. State Police also confirmed that Conner was indicating the sword was real and became aggressive at one point during the situation. It was later to be determined that the sword was indeed plastic.
