The Pittsburgh Steelers held their first practice of the summer in pads Monday at Heinz Field where they are continuing training camp. Coach Mike Tomlin kept a St. Vincent training camp tradition – with rookies taking center stage on the first pads day. The Steelers first game of the regular season is Monday, September 14th in New Jersey against the New York Giants.
The Washington Football Team announced yesterday that it had hired Jason Wright as its new team president, making him the first Black president in the NFL. The 38-year-old, who will run business operations while coach Ron Rivera maintains control over football decisions, will also be the NFL’s youngest president. Wright was a running back for seven years with Atlanta, Cleveland and Arizona, and, with an MBA from the University of Chicago business school, has been working for several years at a strategy and management consulting firm.
The Kansas City Chiefs have announced they have put a plan in place to include some fan attendance when they open their season. The Chiefs host the Houston Texans in the NFL season opener Thursday, September 10th at Arrowhead Stadium, where they expect a reduced capacity of about 20% of fans in attendance.
The Canadian Football League canceled its 2020 season yesterday because of the coronavirus pandemic, the first year since 1919 that the championship Grey Cup won’t be awarded. The nine-team league made the decision due to financial considerations since they wouldn’t be allowed to have fans and the ticket revenue from them.
