Eight major pro sports teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, have signed on to a plan to have their home arenas or stadiums be used as voting “super centers” this fall, providing the large spaces for safer in-person voting during the coronavirus pandemic. There are four NBA teams participating in the “Election Super Centers Project“ so far — the Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks and Washington Wizards — as well as the Steelers in the NFL, MLB’s Boston Red Sox and the NHL’s New Jersey Devils and Washington Capitals. The arenas are available because many will be empty this fall due to mass gatherings not being held because of the pandemic.
The Kansas City Chiefs are not only going to allow fans in attendance at Arrowhead Stadium – they plan to become the first NFL team to allow fans to attend their training camp. The Chiefs will allow up to 2,000 season ticket holders to attend this Saturday and will also allow up to 5,000 season ticket holders to attend their August 29th practice when they plan to raise their Super Bowl championship flag.
Notre Dame has joined North Carolina in canceling in-person undergraduate classes for two weeks after a spike of coronavirus cases on campus. Their semester began last week. They have reported 147 positive tests this week.
Alabama plans to allow 20% of capacity at Bryant-Denny Stadium this season.
