The South Butler County School District is modifying the plan the return of students to education on Monday, August 31st.
The Phased Reopening Plan recommended by Superintendent Dr. David Foley and approved by a school board vote of 6 to 3 will include elementary students attending in person all five days each week while secondary students will use a hybrid schedule of two days in person and three days learning remotely.
Dr. Foley explained some of the reasoning he and other district administrators used in coming up with this proposal.
“I’ve got 1,000 kids coming into the secondary building, trying to maintain social distancing without an A/B schedule,” Foley said. “It’s impossible.”
“With all of our students, masks are going to be a difficult thing,” Foley said.
He also added that the district factored in that high school students are at a higher risk of contracting the virus.
Over 250 parents, district staff, and community members logged in to the virtual South Butler meeting Wednesday night expressing a variety of viewpoints for and against the proposal.
The board agreed to again discuss and revisit this decision at their September meeting which is planned for two weeks after the first day of school.
Dr. Foley also informed the board that delivery of Chromebooks ordered in early May has been delayed but they will be distributed as soon as possible.
