The Pittsburgh Penguins have cut veteran defenseman Jack Johnson and will buy out his contract. The move will allow the Pens some salary cap breathing room – but will also cost them $5.5 million in buy-out cost, with salary cap hits continuing through the 2025-26 season.
It appears the primary reason for the move is due to the 2020-21 NHL salary cap remaining in the vicinity of $81 million for a second straight year due to flat revenues caused by the pandemic.
