As coronavirus cases continue to grow, health officials are again asking people to wear their masks.
Chief Medical Officer of the Butler Health System Dr. David Rottinghaus says that as time develops, it’s become clear that masks work.
“We have some really good data that masks work,” Rottinghaus said. “Anecdotally, working in a hospital with a lot of COVID patients that have come through here, our simple methods of infection control which include wearing a mask and frequent washing of hands, have largely kept us safe.”
Rottinghaus also pointed out that mask wearing can serve as a way to make sure the economy stays open.
“We’ve also seen financial data from one of the big investment banks in New York that estimated if we had very high rates of mask compliance across the country, then we could save the economy one trillion dollars.”
Rottinghaus said if mask wearing doesn’t increase, he wouldn’t be surprised if public health officials had to add more mitigation efforts.
