A proposed amendment to the Pennsylvania constitution that would change how people vote on statewide judges passed through a committee in the house.
The amendment would alter how voters select judges for the state Supreme, Commonwealth, and Superior Courts. Instead of being selected in a statewide race, it would move to regional elections for judges.
Opponents of the bill argue that it would gerrymander the courts, while advocates say it will bring more input from other areas of the state instead of major urban cities.
If the bill passes the house and senate quickly, it could be on the ballot this spring as a referendum to the voters.
