A local lawmaker is working to advance a bill that would require social media companies to provide more notice to users about censorship.
State Senator Scott Hutchinson is circulating a co-sponsorship memo seeking support from colleagues for a bill that would mandate companies provide users information in whiting about why accounts are banned or disabled within 30 days of taking such action.
The bill would also require the company to offer the user recourse in order to achieve restoration of the account.
Hutchinson believes that “these inconsistent and seemingly arbitrary decisions” are raising concerns about if these platforms are more interested in promoting free speech or “advancing specific ideologies”.
