Valentine’s Day is just a few days away, but officials with the FBI say to be on the lookout for romance scams this time of year.
More than 5,700 people in Western Pennsylvania fell victim to “romance scams” in 2020, which resulted in losses over $20 million.
The FBI says that well-rehearsed criminals search dating sites, apps, and other social media networks in an attempt to build fake relationships for the sole purpose of getting your money or information.
Among a list of preventive measures, includes using only reputable dating websites, to research photos and profiles, and to never provide your financial information.
