The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Minnesota Twins 4-2 in Grapefruit League play Tuesday. Kevin Newman continued his hot pre-season with three hits. Dustin Fowler, who is trying to make the team as one of the outfielders, had two hits. Chad Kuhl started for the Pirates and did not allow a run in three innings of work. He gave up two hits, walked two and struck out four.
The Bucs host Tampa Bay today in Bradenton. They are now 8-7-1 this spring.
The Pirates made their first cuts of the spring, sending 15 players to the minor league camp. A number of their top prospects were among the reassignments, including shortstop Oneil Cruz, infielder Rodolfo Castro, and former top picks Quinn Priester, Travis Swaggerty and Nick Gonzales.
