Local police forces could soon be able to use radar guns for speed enforcement.
The Senate Transportation Committee approved a bill that would allow radar speed enforcement earlier this week. The committee’s vice chair, Republican Senator Mario Scavello of Monroe County says this bill will deter drivers from speeding.
“They know that there is radar there, and they are not going to speed. To me, this is going to save lives,” Scavello said.
Scavello also said there’s a limit on how much fines from these bills can go back into municipality budgets.
“There is a cap, and that cap is 10 percent of the total budget of the municipalities. The rest of the dollars will go into a fund to fund police training,” Scavello added.
The bill now moves to the full state Senate.
