The Washington Nationals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 last night in the first game of their three-game series. Reliever Clay Holmes gave up a seventh inning home run to Kyle Schwarber and took the loss. Pirates starter JT Brubaker allowed two runs on four hits over his five innings. Kevin Newman hit his second home run of the season for the Bucs. The loss was the eighth in a row for the Pirates. They have fallen to 19 games under .500 at 23-42 overall.
The two teams play again tonight at 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 6:40pm. Tyler Anderson will start for the Bucs.
Third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes tied Kevin Newman for the longest hitting streak by a Pirates rookie since at least 1900 with a hit last night. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games this season, but has a hit in 19 games dating back to last season.
