With yesterday’s warm temperatures, some residents typically cool down at Alameda Waterpark. That wasn’t the case since the pool now closes on Mondays and Tuesdays due to a lack of lifeguards.
County officials provided more details on the staffing shortages at last week’s public meeting. Currently, the pool has 15 lifeguards on staff, but needs another 15 more in order to open up seven days a week.
The county also bumped up the wages for lifeguards to $10 per hour.
However, another issue arose this year after the county initially agreed with an independent management group to oversee the pool’s operation. They backed out in mid-May, meaning the county had to get the pool up-and-running in a shorter time frame.
The county hopes to add more lifeguards throughout the summer in order to open for longer hours and more days.
They are seeking high school and college students, as well as retirees who may be interested in the part-time job.
