The Butler County Sheriff is warning of a new scam targeting real estate agents.
Sheriff Mike Slupe says this scam appears to be happening across the state, and at least one local real estate agent was contacted recently.
The victim said the phone call was from a 724 area code and that the scammer claimed to be a lieutenant with the Butler County Sheriff’s office.
The scammer then asks the real estate agent to pay a fine for a violation.
The sheriff’s office says they will never ask for payment of a fine over the phone. If anyone is contacted by the scam, hang up and call the sheriff’s office.
