It’s expected to be another hot week, so don’t forget to take care of your pets.
Temperatures are expected to be in the lower 90’s today and tomorrow, and close to 90 through most of this week.
According to the Humane Society, on an 85-degree day, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees.
They also say fans at home don’t cool off pets as effectively as they do people. Having fresh, cold water is important and do have some shade outside with some sort with air flow. According to the Humane Society’s website, a doghouse does not provide relief from heat—in fact, it makes it worse.
There are cooling body wrap, vests or mats that can be purchased to keep your dog cool.
If your dog suffers from heatstroke, move them into the shade or air conditioning, apply ice packs or cold towels to the head, neck and chest or run cool water over them (not cold). Let them drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. Take them directly to a veterinarian.
