AJ Allmendinger was the surprise winner of the Nascar Cup Series race on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Sunday. He took the victory after an overtime restart when leader Denny Hamlin was spun by rookie Chase Briscoe. It was Allmendinger’s second Cup Series win, and first for Kaulig Racing in just their seventh Cup series start. The race saw two multi-car crashes, along with the Hamlin spin within the final five laps of the race. Despite losing the race, Hamlin clinched a post-season playoff spot as the drivers head to Michigan this weekend.
Also at Indy over the weekend, Will Power won the IndyCar Grand Prix Saturday and Austin Cindric took his Xfinity Series-leading sixth victory of the season. AJ Allmendinger was runner-up in that race.
In drag racing, John and Brittany Force became the first father-daughter competitors to win in the same NHRA race weekend. The 72-year old Force defeated J.R. Todd in the Funny Car final for his 154th career win. Brittany took the Top Fuel victory over Clay Millican for her first win of the year, and 11th overall.
