A local young person is supporting the Butler Township Police through a recent construction project.
17-year-old Eagle Scout candidate Spencer Craft of the Cooperstown Troop planned and executed the construction of a pavilion over the Butler Township Police shooting range off Sullivan Run Road earlier this summer.
Although planning began about a year ago, the actual construction was completed over the course of several Saturdays in June and July with help from around 25 different people.
“I knew that I had to get a building permit for it and I just drew up a sketch on a piece of grid paper then I went to the Township administrator and he told me that I needed to get a commercial building permit for it so that was a hurdle getting with an architect and getting all of my blue prints to be official and get an architectural stamp and different things like that so that was probably the biggest hurdle.”
Butler Township Police Chief John Hays believes that Craft deserves recognition for his efforts.
“Spencer was the first that came forward with such a project like this. We sat down with Spencer and he gave us his idea of what was going on and he came down and showed us his drawings. His involvement, hopefully others get involved, maybe not even with us, there’s other places they could help out. But it is greatly appreciated, all the work he did. I mean, you can see it’s a beautiful structure.”
According to Craft, the project cost about $3,500 and was funded entirely with donations from members of the community.
