The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett with their first selection in last night’s NFL draft. The Steelers, with the 20th overall pick, selected the only quarterback taken in the opening round in Las Vegas. It was the first time in three decades that the Steelers took a Pitt product in the opening round, and had been 39 years since the Black and Gold did not take a chance on another Pitt quarterback in Dan Marino. In general manager Kevin Colbert’s final draft with the team, he and head coach Mike Tomlin added the 24-year old Heisman Trophy finalist to their quarterback group that includes newly signed free agent Mitch Trubisky and former second-round pick Mason Rudolph.
Pickett spent the night watching the draft with his family and friends at the Deal Lake Bar in Loch Arbour, New Jersey – a beach community next to Asbury Park. His selection was announced in Vegas by Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris, as the NFL honored the 50th year since his Immaculate Reception.
Pickett was the first Pitt player to be taken in the opening round since Los Angeles Rams defensive star Aaron Donald in 2014.
The Jacksonville Jaguars set the tone for last night’s draft when they selected Georgia defensive end Travon Walker, who was the first of five defensive players from that university to be taken in the first round, and NFL record. Washington selected Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson with their 16th overall pick. The Commanders had the #11 pick, but swapped with New Orleans for additional picks. A total of eight trades involving first round picks were made prior and during last night’s event.
Rounds two and three of the draft continue tonight at 7pm.
