After inking deals with veteran players Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Rickard Rakell, the Pittsburgh Penguins added defenseman Jan Rutta on the first day of NHL Free Agency. Rutta has been a member of the recent back-to-back championship teams in Tampa Bay. He received a three-year deal with an average value of $2.75 million.
The Pens also added former draft pick Josh Archibald who made his NHL debut in 2015 in Pittsburgh. He played in Edmonton last year. They also added forward Drake Caggiula with a two-way contract. He has played in 278 NHL games for four different teams.
The Pens lost goaltender Louis Domingue to the New York Rangers, but signed 32-year old Dustin Tokarski as a third goaltender. Tokarski was with the Pens in the 2019-2020 season.
The biggest contract in the first day of NHL free agency went to Johnny Gaudreau who signed a seven-year deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets. It will pay him just under $10 million per year. He turned down a chance to re-sign with the Calgary Flames, who had offered him an eight-year deal.
