With Valentine’s Day right around the corner the FBI is warning residents about romance scams.
These scams happen when a criminal adopts a fake online identity to gain the victim’s trust and affection. The scammer then tries to manipulate or steal from victims.
According to the FBI, in 2021 there were 167 victims who lost a total of $8.5 million combined in Western Pennsylvania.
The FBI encourages online users to be careful about what they post online and research a person’s profile and images to see if any photos have been used elsewhere.
