The Pittsburgh Penguins won their second game in a row with a six goal outburst in the second period last night, on their way to a 7-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Pens scored five goals in a span of five minutes after Tampa Bay had taken a 2-1 lead in the first period. Seven different Penguins players scored a goal in the game.
Sidney Crosby reached the 70 point mark during the game and became the first active NHL player, and 14th all-time to reach that mark in a season at least 13 times in a career.
The Pens were 2-7-2 entering last night’s second game of a back-to-back schedule this season. It was the first time since the second week of December that they put together two wins under that schedule.
Pittsburgh music legend Donnie Iris sang the national anthem prior to the game. He was celebrating his 80th birthday, and was given a #80 jersey.
The Pens will visit Nashville Tuesday.
The Pens topped the St. Louis Blues 3-2 in overtime Saturday.
They lost winger Kasperi Kapanen to the Blues, who claimed him off waivers from the Pens. The Blues will absorb his $3.2 million cap hit this season and in 2024.
