The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the San Francisco Giants 2-1 last night. Starting pitcher Johan Oviedo struggled with control, walking five batters. But, he allowed just one earned run on three hits while pitching into the fifth inning.
Four Pirate relievers tossed 4-2/3rd shutout innings. David Bednar earned his 10th save of the season. It was his first opportunity for a save since April 29th.
Connor Joe hit his sixth home run of the season in the first inning. The Bucs manufactured the winning run after two singles and a Giants error in the fifth inning. The victory was the Pirates first one-run win since April 22nd.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak and moved the Pirates back to the .500 mark at 27-27 overall. They are now one game behind Milwaukee in the N.L. Central. The Brewers lost to Toronto 7-2.
The two teams complete their three-game series this afternoon at 3:45pm. WISR pre-game is 3:20pm. Mitch Keller will start for the Pirates. He is 6-1 this season with a 3.01 ERA.
The Bucs are off Thursday, then open a nine-game home-stand. The St. Louis Cardinals come in for the weekend.
