The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the New York Mets 2-1 Sunday afternoon at PNC Park. The Bucs took two of three games in their weekend series with the Mets. Andrew McCutchen picked up the 2,000th hit of his career with a single in the first inning. Mitch Keller allowed one run on just two hits in seven innings of work and picked up his eighth win of the season. He walked two and struck out seven. David Bednar earned his 14th save in 15 tries this season. Jack Suwinski hit his 13th home run of the year and had two of the Pirates eight hits.
The Pirates are off today, then begin a six-game road trip against National League Central Division opponents, starting with the Chicago Cubs Tuesday.
The Bucs now lead the Central Division by one game after Milwaukee fell to Oakland 8-5 Sunday. The Pirates visit the Brewers this weekend.
The Pirates defeated the Mets 14-7 Friday, but lost 5-1 Saturday.
Starting pitcher Vince Velasquez saw his season end last week after he underwent elbow surgery. He will be out nearly a full year.
