Patrick Mahomes was honored as best men’s sports athlete at The ESPY Awards, while skier Mikaela Shiffrin received the top women’s sports honor. Mahomes led the Kansas Chiefs to their second Super Bowl victory in five seasons in February. The Chiefs were also honored as the Best Team. Shiffrin broke Ingemar Stenmark’s World Cup skiing record for career wins.
Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James won the ESPY award for Best Record-Breaking Performance after passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. As he accepted the award last night, he announced he would be returning to play for at least another season. James had openly pondered retirement after the Lakers were swept by the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference finals. He will become the sixth player in league history to play in his 21st season.
