High School golf from Thursday:
–The Seneca Valley boys golfers defeated Butler 184-197 at Slippery Rock Golf Club. Tyler Garvin was medalist for the Raiders with a 34. Teammate Anthony Cardosi added a 35. Hunter Swidzinski led Butler with a 37. Wyatt Kos shot 38.
–The Butler girls defeated Mars 206-217 at Hiland Golf Course. Paige Ponteous led the Golden Tornado as medalist with a 42.
Rory McIlroy and Brian Harmon were the first round leaders at the BMW Championship in Illinois. Both shot rounds of 5-under 65 to lead six other players by one stroke. Scottie Scheffler is is in that group after a 66. Defending champion Patrick Cantlay and FedEx Cup point leader Jon Rahm are three back.
Neal Shipley, a Central Catholic High School graduate advanced Thursday to the quarterfinal round of the U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills in Denver. Shipley, the 2022 Pennsylvania Amateur and West Penn Open champion, defeated Cooper Jones from BYU, 3 and 2, to advance to the round of eight. The 22-year old Shipley, who currently plays at Ohio State, is one of four players from Western Pennsylvania in recent years to advance to the semifinal round of the 123-year-old championship. However, no player from the area has won it since Latrobe’s Arnold Palmer it in 1954.
