The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission has granted approval for the sale of the Butler Area Sewer Authority assets to Pennsylvania American Water Company.
Following the payment of debts and liabilities, the remainder of the $230 million sale price will be divided between the two governmental entities that formed BASA in 1964, Butler City and Butler Township.
After the process began with an offer in September of last year, local residents were included in the consideration process through a series of public hearings and community gatherings. BASA’s operations center will be maintained for a minimum of 10 years and all current employees will retain their jobs with existing salaries.
The nearly 15,000 BASA customers will receive details explaining a transition of services over the next several weeks. A rate freeze will be in place for at least one year after the sale is final.
