The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired left-handed starting pitcher Marco Gonzales from the Atlanta Braves for cash and a player to be named later. The 31-year old Gonzales is coming off a season cut short due to forearm issues. After going 4-1 with a 5.21 ERA with Seattle over 10 starts, he went on the Injured List in June, before having season-ending surgery to repair a nerve in August. Gonzales had been acquired by Atlanta in a trade with Seattle two days ago. In nine major league seasons, Gonzales has gone 65-49 with a 4.14 ERA in 162 games, 155 of those are starts. Gonzales is due to make $12 million in 2024, although the Mariners and Braves will be paying at least half of that salary. He also has a club option for $15 million in 2025.
The Cleveland Guardians won the top overall pick in the 2024 MLB entry draft last night in the annual lottery. The Pirates received the ninth overall pick, the fifth straight season they received a top-10 selection. Cincinnati received the second pick, followed by Colorado, Oakland and the Chicago White Sox.
