The New York Yankees crushed the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-0 Wednesday in spring training play. Giancarlo Stanton led the Yankees with three home runs in the game. He hit two, including a grand-slam off Pirates starter Marco Gonzales, who allowed nine earned runs in 3-2/3rds innings. The Bucs had only four hits – Ke’Bryan Hayes and Oneil Cruz each doubled, continuing their strong springs. The Pirates third baseman entered this one hitting .421 over his first 13 games, while Cruz was tied for the MLB
pre-season lead in homers, with seven and the Grapefruit League with 32 total bases.
The Pirates host Toronto tonight in Bradenton. Bailey Falter will start the game for the Bucs. He has allowed 11 earned runs in six appearances this spring. Their regular season begins in Miami a week from today.
