The Pirates
Nick Gonzales singled to score Bryan Reynolds in the bottom of the eighth inning for his eighth career game-winning RBI, as the Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 2-1, on Monday night before 18,970 at PNC Park. The Buccos are back in action tonight against the Cards at 6:40 on WISR.
The Pittsburgh Pirates signed five college players selected on the second day of the MLB Draft — including one with Westmoreland County ties — and assigned them to the Florida Complex League in Bradenton, Fla.
Pirates amateur scouting director Justin Horowitz announced the signings Monday of three pitchers, a shortstop and a catcher. Terms of the signing bonuses were not revealed.
ACC
Commissioner Jim Phillips said Monday he will “fight to protect the ACC and our members for as long as it takes.”
Phillips spoke Monday at the ACC Football Kickoff event in Charlotte, N.C., about how the league is handling lawsuits filed by Florida State and Clemson — and the league’s countersuits — while questions have surfaced across college athletics about the ACC’s future.
Uneasy about the revenue gap between the ACC, SEC and Big Ten that is largely tied to television revenue, Florida State and Clemson filed lawsuits challenging their league’s withdrawal penalty and grant-of-rights agreement that each school signed. The agreement binds members to the league through 2036.
Olympics
Lebron James scored the final 11 points for the Americans down the stretch, and the four-time reigning Olympic gold medalists held off World Cup champion Germany, 92-88, on Monday in London in their final tune-up before the Paris Games start later this week.
NBA
Turner Sports intends to continue its longtime relationship with the NBA.
Warner Bros. Discovery informed the league Monday that it will match the $1.8 billion per year offer by Amazon Prime Video. Turner has had an NBA package since 1984 and games have been on TNT since the network launched in 1988.
