Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection will continue to test water in Western PA for traces of contamination from the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment.
Although the DEP says that their sampling, combined with that of an independent contractor found no evidence of water or soil contamination earlier this year, water resources in Beaver and Lawrence Counties will continue to be monitored for ten years.
Following the derailment in February of 2023, three sentinel monitoring wells were installed in Pennsylvania within a one mile radius of the derailment location.
These wells are used for early detection of groundwater contamination and officials say that water has not been impacted so far. The Shapiro administration continues to push Norfolk Southern for accountability.
