The Pennsylvania Drought Task Force has declared drought conditions in 35 counties across the state including Butler.
Officials say the Drought Watch is from a combination of deficits in precipitation, stream flows, groundwater levels, and soil moisture.
While not required, residents and businesses are encouraged to reduce their nonessential water use voluntarily in order to conserve water. A whole list of preemptive measures can be found on the website of the Department of Environmental Protection.
There is also an increased fire risk in dryer conditions. Residents are warned that sparks from a car, machine exhaust, or burning trash can ignite a fire that could quickly get out of control.
The Drought Task Force will continue to meet to evaluate conditions and decide if or when a Drought Warning or Emergency declaration is necessary.
