As temperatures continue to drop, State Police are reminding residents of proper pet treatment.
These basic care requirements are laws that if not followed can lead to criminal charges.
Pets must have clean, unfrozen water access to avoid dehydration;, officials say pets need the same amount of water in the winter as they do in the summer to help keep the natural metabolism working.
Pets must also have weather protected, dry, and clean shelter. Dogs can also only be tethered outside unattended with no shelter for no more than 30 minutes when temperatures drop below 32 degrees.
Finally, if it seems a pet is suffering from a weather-related injury they must be take to a veterinary.
Not following these care requirements could lead to animal neglect and/or cruelty charges.
