With rain moving into the area, those who live near rivers, creeks, and streams should stay vigilant of ice jams.
This happens when ice is broken in body of waters and the water then pushes the ice to form a dam.
“Everybody should stay vigilent, especially in Butler County and their history with the Connoquenessing Creek. They sometimes get problems with the ice, depending on how fast it has been falling out over the last couple of days as it has gotten warmer,” Shannon Hefferan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said.
Hefferan says it may only rain between a quarter of an inch to half in inch in Butler but these small rain amounts could still cause problems.
“I’ve been over to the Cononquenessing Creek over the last couple of weeks and the ice is building. The ice can get pretty thick, especially when it’s been cold for a very long time,” Hefferan said. “On the Allegheny River, it’s very thick and can support a person’s weight. So the smaller creeks probably have a lot more ice and that’s a concern.”
Drivers traveling through any water are advised to proceed with caution.
