The Seattle Kraken have fired former Penguins coach Dan Bylsma after his first season as their coach. They went 35-41-6 this season. The Kraken will enter fifth season as an NHL franchise with their third new head coach.
The New York Rangers have fired head coach Peter Laviolette after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
In the playoffs Monday night:
–Washington defeated Montreal 3-2 in overtime in Game 1 of their best-of-seven series. Alexander Ovechkin scored his first playoff overtime goal to save the Capitals after they blew a 2-0 lead in the third period.
–Dallas evened their series at 1-1 with Colorado with a 4-3 win in overtime.
–Los Angeles defeated the Edmonton Oilers 6-5 with a game-winning goal in the final minute of their series opener. The Kings built a 4-0 lead before Edmonton eventually tied the game at 5-5 late in the third period.
–Winnipeg took a 2-0 series lead over St. Louis following a 2-1 win last night.
