Governor Josh Shapiro is calling on the state house to pass legislation that would prevent private equity groups from buying hospitals.
This comes after several health systems in Pennsylvania are set to close after being taken over by private equity groups.
The Health System Protection act would ban sale-leaseback schemes, give the office of attorney general authority to block healthcare acquisitions that put communities at risk, and protect healthcare facilities from predatory business practices.
The governors 2025-26 budget also calls for an additional $10 million for rural hospitals.
