With Memorial Day marking the unofficial start of summer, many people will be breaking out the grill. However, fire officials are reminding users to be safe when preparing summertime food.
Fire departments respond to an average of over 9,000 fires each year involving gas grills resulting in over 20,000 injuries annually.
They remind grillers to check propane tanks for any leaks, keep the grill clean by removing grease or fat, and to make sure the grill is far away from any home or deck railings. Also,
- Always make sure the gas grill lid is open before lighting
- Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grilling area
- Only use charcoal starter fluid for charcoal grilling. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. When finished grilling on a charcoal grill, let the coals cool completely before disposing in a metal container.
- Never leave a grill unattended when in use.
