The Pittsburgh Pirates wrote the script for “Scoreless in Seattle” over the weekend…..
After their successful home-stand that saw them sweep the St. Louis Cardinals with three shutouts, the Pittsburgh Pirates opened their nine game road trip by being swept in three shutouts by the Seattle Mariners. The Bucs lost back-to-back games by 1-0, including Sunday afternoon. The Bucs lost 6-0 in the first game of the series Friday night.
They managed one extra-base hit in the series, a Nick Gonzales double Friday night. (In that game, Seattle hit four home runs…)
Paul Skenes pitched five shutout innings Sunday. He did not walk a batter, allowed five hits and struck out 10. Carmen Mlodzinski took the loss when he allowed the only run of the game on a home run in the sixth inning. The Pirates had five hits in the game, all singles, and struck out 13 times.
In Saturday’s game, rookie Mike Burrows pitched five shutout innings on three hits, but reliever Caleb Ferguson allowed the only run of the game, in the sixth inning. The Pirates had two hits in that game, both were singles by Spencer Horwitz.
The Pirates begin a three-game series with the Kansas City Royals tonight at 7:40pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 7:15pm.
In Sunday’s game, Oneil Cruz threw out a runner at home plate in the first inning. His throw was more than 105 miles per hour from centerfield, and is the second-hardest thrown ball to produce an outfield assist since Statcast began tracking in 2015.
The Pirates failed to score a run in a series of three or more games for the first time since 1888, when they were known as the Pittsburgh Alleghenys.
