A new law protecting state residents from A.I. scams has been signed by Governor Josh Shapiro.
The “digital forgery” law was signed this week, and it stiffens penalties against those who make deep-fakes or voice clones with an attempt to scam.
An updated amendment in the law that allowed exceptions with the line “an instance of satire, parody, commentary, criticism” was replaced with the phrase “constitutionally protected activity.”
Law enforcement officers were also included in the exception list when in the performance of their duties.
Violating the new law has been classified as a first-degree misdemeanor which can carry an up to five-year prison sentence and fine up to $10,000.
The law will officially take place in 60 days.
